The Legacy
Imagine a world where there are no children, no death, no war. You rely your life on just a simple pill, which it seems impossible, but yet here it is, the cure for every disease, even cancer. Suddenly, you hear about people that have disappeared, and the Authorities tell you that the “Underground” have contaminated a batch of the drug, and that the people that were poisoned are under there best care. You know they're lying, because there are even more people disappearing. The author to The Legacy, Gemma Malley, demonstrates through the book that life is a fragile thing, and that Mother Nature is not an enemy.
According to Sinauer Associates (http://www.sinauer.com/cooper5e/sample/Cooper5e_Ch17.pdf), we haven’t quite reached the breakthrough to cell restoration, which is what Longevity does, we have found out that the endothelial cells that line the blood vessels are another type of fully differentiated cell that remains capable of proliferation. In other words, endothelial cells can be restored.
Life is a dangerous thing to tamper with. To attempt to renew it would be dangerous because you would have to interrupt the circle of life, the delicate balance between life and death. Albert Fern, the creator of the drug called Longevity, was trying to protect the circle of life, but was killed by Richard Pinsent. Richard released the drug out to the public, and now he finds out that the drug isn’t working, and decides to hide the bodies, and he decides to blame the Underground, as a diversion to find the true formula, instead of copying.
The Underground are trying to maintain the circle of life, by “creating” their own world underground. Richard Pinsent has blamed them for the deaths, so now everyone is out for them. Their leader, Pip, couldn’t handle it, so he turns himself in without telling anyone in the Underground, and they were shock. They go to save him and as soon as all the main characters are there, it turns out Pip is Albert Fern.
Albert explains that there was no formula, and that it wasn’t the fact that the copies weren't working it was that Mother Nature found a cure for Longevity, and was destroying it. Since Pip was the leader of the Underground and had to leave, because he didn’t belong, he gave the Underground to Jude, the most loyal person in the Underground, who was flabbergasted. They were all in shock that Pip had to go, but his job to protect the circle of life was a success, so he left.
The Legacy futuristicly shows us what happens to us when we go against the natural laws of Mother Nature. This book teaches us that we need to be more cautious of what we do otherwise we will end up wiping ourselves out.
