Growing up my parents raised me to be kind, to respect my elders and to think before I did. For pretty much everyone, this was the case. Will for the book The Ranger’s Apprentice by John Flanagan, was raised just like most parents want. He treated people with the respect other people to have for him but some kids still bullied him. Now people push him to the limits and test if he is really kind, respects authority, and thinks before he acts.
An example of when Will needed to think before he acted was when he was trying to catch a horse. Tug, the swift horse, continuously dodged out of Will reach. Now tired of chasing the horse, he stopped, took a deep breath, looked around, and thought about what his next move would be. Grabbing an apple from a nearby tree would lure Tug into his reach, catching the horse.
Instead of just running in and not thinking he made wise choices that made him get bullies not as much as some of the other kids. Not being around them help but when they have to work together, it’s not fun at all. Just like when there were wild boars that had to be killed. And these boars are not normal, they are huge and powerful. After slaying the first boar all the knights let down the guard and began to walk away. Little did they know that there was a second boar still behind the bush. Horus (Will’s bully) jumps into action, while slipping on the morning dew. Now helpless on the ground Will strikes the boar with his puny arrow changing the target from Horus to Will to save his life. In doing so Will showed his kindness saving the person who he liked least.
Teenagers might not have liked him but adults did. Because of him Respecting their authority Will become the favorite to all that knew him including his trainer, Halt. Halt trying to test him only made him like Will even more. Like when they were just about to start training, he did everything and anything that Halt said to do. He wouldn’t interrupt him whenever he was speaking and nothing would be said back in return.
Most of the themes in this book can relate to the short story Thank You Ma’am. Roger, a kind, misguided child is in trouble and stuck inside Mrs. Jones house. With plenty of chances to ehscape he decided to hang around and see what is going to happen. Will and Roger are both respectful, Will to everyone and Roger to Mrs. Jones like when he asked if she need him to run to the store for her. Also in the end of each novel they are both left with the skill to think before they act, thanks to major characters in each story.
Kindness, respect of authority, and think before you act are major themes. They all impact people first impression of you. When you see someone dressed walking down the street and they have their pants down to their thighs while swearing in every other sentence, what do you think for them? I personally cannot stand it. All in all these themes are important in life and shouldn’t be overlooked.
